Understanding what drives and motivates you is one of the key pillars of Emotional Intelligence and a key driver of success. However, there isn’t a single widely known model to follow which will allow you to do this easily.

A great place to start is Martin Seligman’s PERMA:  Positive Emotion, Engagement (Flow), Relationships, Meaning, and Achievement.

Daniel Pink asks you to consider AMP: Autonomy, Master & Purpose

David Rock suggests SCARF: Status, Certainty, Autonomy, Relatedness, and Fairness

Although these models aren’t quite looking at the same things, they can all usefully be applied to what drives us in our lives and at work.  Spending time considering any one of them is time well spent.

Further Action

  • Pick the model which appeals the most and invest time thinking about what drives and motivates you.
  • Think about how much of the various drivers are fulfilled for you in a typical Day, Week, Year.
  • Discuss the same models with your team. If you understand what drives them, then you will be better placed to manage and lead them.
