Most organisations will have at least one day a year dedicated to looking at the long term Strategy and Vision of the organization.
Although each Strategy Day is unique, they often follow a similar pattern and having an external expert to help create a clear agenda and to then facilitate a constructive and productive day, can be invaluable.
Done well, creating a Vision, Mission Statements, Value Statements, a Strategic Plan and Business Unit Plans can help to shape and direct business success. However, creating these documents won’t automatically have a positive impact in their own right and much time and effort can be wasted to little or no effect. Moreover, A Vision which is perceived to be “imposed” upon an organisation from above will likely be counter-productive.
A Good Strategy Day will address the “Strategic spine” of the organisation (the five levels of documents above.) It will also address the Team dynamic of the Leadership Team. It will also discuss the kind of behaviours which will help to successfully implement the plan and those which are likely to derail it.
A Strategy Day is a considerable investment in Executive time for any organization.
